Chief Secretary concludes Sichuan visit (with photos/video)

The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang, and the HKSARG delegation today (September 2) witnessed the signing of the project design contract of the Sichuan Hong Kong Rehabilitation Centre in the Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital.

The Rehabilitation Centre is a flagship project among the HKSAR-funded medical facilities. The Centre will serve as the hub of the rehabilitation network in Sichuan and support the training and development of rehabilitation professionals. Apart from providing comprehensive physical and psychological rehabilitation services for the disabled, the Centre will also provide professional and related training to rehabilitation service workers in the Province.

The total project cost is about RMB 500 million, RMB 220 million of which will be borne by the HKSAR. The project design contract was awarded to the South China Architectural Design and Research Institute. Parties concerned are pressing ahead with the design and other preparatory work, with a view to commencing the construction early next year.

Mr Tang then met people receiving rehabilitation treatment at the rehabilitation centre dedicated to those injured in the earthquake.

Mr Tang also held a working meeting with Mr Wei Hong, Executive Vice-governor of the Sichuan Provincial Government. The two sides reviewed the progress of HKSAR-funded reconstruction projects and planned the work in the next stage. Thanks to the joint effort of the HKSARG and Sichuan Provincial Government. The HKSAR-funded projects, especially the first and second stage projects which had been kicked off earlier would enter construction phase gradually. Mr Tang and Mr Wei agreed that the focus of the next stage would be strengthening the management and supervision of the projects to ensure their quality and proper use of funding.

Delegates attending today's activities include the Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Stephen Lam, Deputy Secretary for Food and Health, Mrs Susan Mak, and representatives from relevant bureaux and departments. The delegation concluded the visit and returned to Hong Kong this afternoon.
